Subway Line 3
From Beijingology
Line 3 of the Beijing Subway is presently a subway line under projection. Actual groundbreaking work has not gotten underway yet, nor have building permits been obtained.
The projected Line 3 is expected to be Beijing's 4th west-east line (after Lines 1, 6 and 7). Line 3 will likely run under what is usually termed Ping'an Avenue and finally pass through Dongsi Shitiao Subway Station's underground level 3, which has long been a prereserved interchange station. The Workers' Stadium is expected to be served with Line 3, which will then head northeast via Yaojiayuan and Dongba and finally end in the eastern suburbs of the city.
Earlier projections, however, foresaw a very different Line 3. Line 3 would have started at Majiapu and worked itself north via Caihuying, Guang'anmen and further up, until it ran through the city from west to east. However, it would run through Dongzhimen Inner Street instead of Ping'an Avenue. This projection saw Line 3 end up in Jiangtai Road, near Jiuxianqiao.
An even earlier projection (during the Mao era) foresaw a Line 3 from Xizhimen running northwest to the Summer Palace. However, because it had no real economic benefit back in the day, it was ultimately shelved.
