Station diagram
Pingguoyuan Subway Station is an underground subway station on the Beijing Subway's Line 1. This is presently the westernmost terminus on Line 1. By no later than 2015, the station is expected to become an interchange station with the Datai Line.

Pingguoyuan station is named for the nearby Pingguoyuan region. It is in western suburban Beijing's Shijingshan District. Mac people may be disappointed in learning that there are no Apple shops nearby, despite its name meaning Apple Orchard.

The station is the only one in Line 1 not to either appear in the form of underground passages or bear the "Sino-Sov" style; it, in fact, is housed inside a village shack. In early January 2008, two new glass buildings were erected outside the original "village shacks".

History

The station was built in the 1960s and opened as part of Beijing's first subway line. At first, Pingguoyuan was designed as a military-only station, but services for the general public were officially inaugurated around 1981.

On October 24, 2006, a fatal accident occurred at 06:40, when a man jumping off the overcrowded platform was crushed by an eastbound train. The accident sealed the station for 34 minutes (until 07:12), while massive crowds erupted outside the station, causing traffic disturbances, overloaded buses outside Pingguoyuan and trains initially skipping stations. Delays on Line 1 were up to 20 minutes long. Westbound trains into Pingguoyuan were cut short, and service between Pingguoyuan and Gucheng was interrupted until the accident was dealt with. The casualty was a 30-something man who was not from Beijing.

In late 2007, "boxes" were built at all exits so as to enable the use of the AFC ticketing system, which went into operation on June 9, 2008. (The original entrances were too narrow and could only accomodate two "temporary" mini-AFC units.)

Very occasional services to two stations further west of Pingguoyuan (which were and still remain closed to ordinary passengers) were interrupted in 2008.
