History
The subway station was completed by the mid-1980s. The Line 1 part of Jianguomen Station opened to the public beginning September 28, 1999, making this the Beijing Subway's second interchange station. Through services on Line 1 to both termini (Pingguoyuan and Sihui East) commenced in late June 2000.
Geography
The station lies at three corners of Jianguomen Bridge (there is no access at the southeastern corner of the bridge). In its vicinity are also:
- Eastern 2nd Ring Road (north-south)
- Jianguomen Inner Street (westbound)
- Jianguomen Outer Street (eastbound)
Architecture
Jianguomen station takes the shape of three "formal-looking" boxes. Exits A and C appear white; exit B is more tan.
Interior
Jianguomen station has three underground levels, with the platform on the lower two levels. Underground Levels 2 and 3 are split halls. Passengers must choose their exits in advance before leaving the platform level.
Station Layout
| Ground Level (Mixed area) | Exits | |
| Underground Level 1 (Mixed area) | Concourse Line 1 / Line 2 interchange passageway | |
| Underground Level 2 (Paid area) | Western platform | Subway Line 2 (clockwise) (Next station: Beijing Railway Station) |
| Eastern platform | Subway Line 2 (counterclockwise) (Next station: Chaoyangmen) | |
| Underground Level 3 (Paid area) | Northern platform | Subway Line 1 to Pingguoyuan (Next station: Dongdan) |
| Southern platform | Subway Line 1 to Sihui East (Next station: Yonganli) |
Interchange
The interchange passageways at Jianguomen station were built early to enable an eventual Line 1 extension further east to link up with Line 2 with relative ease. Passengers transferring to Line 1 from Line 2 use the same T-shaped two-staircase changeover path as is present at Fuxingmen station, but those transferring back to Line 2 have the option of either using the interchange passageways at the far end of the Line 1 platforms or an interchange station staircase in the middle of the Line 1 part. The mid-platform interchange is bidirectional (although the vast majority of passengers are Line 1 travellers transferring to Line 2) and saves quite a bit of walking time from the far-end transfer passageways. The signposted (and thus the recommended) interchange passageways are signposted and refer to the mid-platform passage.
Platform Layout
Lines 1 and 2 both use central island platforms.
