Dongdan station is named after Dongdan Crossing, which back in the day was the eastern terminus on Beijing's west-east axis.
The Line 1 part of Dongdan station takes the shape of two tan boxes (exits A and B) or two integrated exits into the underpass system (exits C and D) The Line 5 part are either integrated into the underpass system (exits A and D) or are two boxes with alternating glass/grey stripes (exits B and C). No exit connects directly with Oriental Plaza. The livery of the station at platform level is either marble (Line 1 part) or bright orange (Line 5 part).

History
The Line 1 part of Dongdan station opened on September 28, 1999, as Subway Line 1 extended from Xidan station to Sihui East station.
Beginning 14:00 on October 7, 2007, Dongdan became an interchange as the Line 5 part officially entered service, along with the two interchange passageways.
In early 2008, the two interchange passageways, which used to be bidirectional, were made one-way after an accident with the at-level escalator.

Interior
All parts of Dongdan station have two underground levels, with the platform on the lower level. For the Line 1 part, all Line 1 exits are accessible through a central hall. For the Line 5 part, Underground Level 1 is a split hall between a northern side hall with exits A and B, and a southern side hall with exits C and D. Passengers from Underground Level 2 must choose their exits in advance before leaving the platform level.

Interchange
The interchange at Dongdan is especially crowded during peak hours, and at lunchtime, too, can be congested. Trains arriving mid-morning and mid-afternoon tend to set off less passengers, thus reducing flow at the interchange passageways. Transfers to Line 1 can get especially crowded.
The interchanges used to be bi-directional; however, months after Line 5 opened, and especially after an accident with the at-level escalator, the interchanges have been made one-way only. Line 1 passengers transferring to Line 5 now use the northern passageway; those transferring from Line 5 to Line 1 now use the southern passageway. The situation has improved somewhat, but the fact that the at-level escalator is off during rush hours still doesn't completely solve the problem.
In any case, the interchange station is very busy for much of the day. During rush hour, the crowd can slow to a crawl; those in a rush who don't mind an extra CNY 2 can use Line 1 exit A and Line 5 exit B to switch between the two lines. (This involves actually leaving the station.)
Interchange Access
- Line 1 → Line 5: At-level escalators provided but out of service; escalators available throughout (but may be out of service); foldable wheelchair ramps available on stairs
- Line 5 → Line 1: At-level escalators provided but out of service; escalators available throughout (but may be out of service); foldable wheelchair ramps available on stairs
Optimized Transfers
To transfer quickly from Line 5 to Line 1:
- Passengers from Tiantongyuan North southbound to Songjiazhuang are advised to take the 2nd carriage (close to the front of the train).
- Passengers from Songjiazhuang northbound to Tiantongyuan North are advised to take the 4th or 5th carriage (close to the back of the train).
Alternatively, passengers can exit via Line 1 exit A and Line 5 exit B, but this will set them an additional CNY 2 fare.
Platform Layout
Both Lines 1 and 5 use central island platforms.

Dongdan station can be very busy during rush hour, and the interchange passageway, most in demand, can be packed to the extent the crowd slows to a crawl. Even during lunch hour, lots of passengers change lines at this station.
Exits at Dongdan can be less busy as there are eight exits in all, which are all connected inside the paid hour.

Therefore, it is possible for a Line 1 passenger to exit using any Line 5 exit after passing through the interchange passageway; equally, a passenger entering through a Line 5 "box" (exit) can access Line 1 after using the interchange passageway.
Both Lines 1 and 5 use four exits each, bringing the total number of exits at Dongdan to eight.
